If I'm going to be on the level here, I'm a bit disappointed that Team AAA, featuring Fenix, Drago, and Aerostar, is not going to be going up against either the Snake Pit or the Nightmare Warriors, instead being pitted against the comedic option. Don't get me wrong; it will more than likely be an entertaining match. However, what I've seen from those three luchadores on Lucha Underground had me salivating for a more athletic match against, say, Hallowicked, Frightmare, and Silver Ant. Additionally, at least Drago and Fenix are booked the next night in Montreal for International Wrestling Syndicate's Scarred for Life, so this is the only match the crowd's going to get from the trio. Still, having them there for one night is still a boon, and it's not like Chuck Taylor or Drew Gulak are slouches even in comedy situations.
That announcement leaves the Warriors against the Snake Pit, which is a match that includes six of Chikara's finest and most exciting workers. Both teams were announced marked as favorites to win the whole thing, so someone having to go home in the first round seems huge. I wouldn't be surprised if this match main events the first night (although I get the feeling Devastation Corporation vs. Blue World Order is the marquee match to be honest), and I also wouldn't be surprised at all if it's the best match on the card. But with this contest and the Bullet Club/Battle Hive matches on tap, night one could turn out to be pretty special.
Of course, night two ought to be pretty cool as well with the two Rey de Voladores eliminator first round matches. Matt Cross and Mascara Purpura were named as the first two competitors. Like Cross, the third name is no stranger to the RdV tournament, as he participated in what may have been the best of the mini-tournaments in 2011. Pinkie Sanchez, the BDK's resident bad boy, will return for another crack at the trophy he failed to capture four years ago. He'll add a little rudo color to the proceedings.
King of Trios weekend is creeping closer and closer. It's shaping up to be not only one of the best wrestling slates of the year, but it's also looking to join 2011 in the pantheon of all-time great weekends on paper. A lot more still has to be announced, but either way, it's looking to be a sweet weekend.
