For many people, the weekend started yesterday with the Fourth of July. However, while everyone at least south of Canada and north of Mexico was ensconced in cookouts yesterday, there's still the matter of the other three days of that long spell off from work. Yesterday, we all gorged on meats, beer, and mayonnaise-based starch salads. Today through Sunday? WE DINE ON WRESTLING.
As always, you can check out Pro Wrestling Events for the skinny on events in your area. There are literally hundreds of events of varying providence happening around the country, nay, the continent, nay, THE WORLD! Even some might be happening in your area. Here are some of the more prominent ones, or at least the ones familiar to me.
Tonight's big event happens in Ybor City, FL at the Orpheum. Full Impact Pro will be live on Internet pay-per-view at 9PM on WWN Live, but if you're local, you can still get tickets. The main event of Declaration of Independence features Jon Davis defending his FIP Championship against Trent? (Barretta) in a match that should be a great contrast of sizes and styles. There's also a dandy of a contest for fans of high-flying junior heavyweights, as Jonathan Gresham defends his ZERO One International Junior Heavyweight Championship against Lince Dorado. Los Ben Dejos will have their hands full as they defend their Tag Championships against the Bravados and the KOA (Sugar Dunkerton and Aaron Epic). There will also be an interesting four-way freestyle match, as Jessicka Havok, Amasis, Latin Dragon, and Maxwell Chicago will all enter the fray.
Also tonight, in Port Coquitlam, BC at the Elks Lodge, Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling will present The Art of Wrestling. As the name of the show suggests, Colt Cabana will be making an appearance in a main event six man tag, teaming with Randy Myers and Artemis Spencer against Ice, Sid Sylum, and Bishop. Also on the show, Scotty Mac defends the Canadian Championship against Tony Baroni, and Nicole Matthews wrestles Hellion. Doors will open at 7:30PM local time.
Staying in British Columbia, Saturday, ECCW moves over to the Russian Community Center in Vancouver for TLC VIII. The doors open at 7PM, and the main event will be for the vacant ECCW Championship in a four-way tables, ladders, and chairs match. Sid Sylum and Tony Baroni are in the first two slots, while the other two will be contested in qualifying matches. The first pits El Phantasmo against Kenny Lush, and the second pits Alex Plexis against Randy Myers. Also on the show, Colt Cabana is back to take on Bishop, the Bollywood Boyz will defend their Tag Championships, and Nicole Matthews defends her Women's Championship against KC Spinelli.
Arguably the main event of the weekend is also happening in Canada on Saturday, this time on the Eastern end of the great nation in Montreal. Doors open on NCW: Femmes Fatale XII at Centre Sportif St. Barthelemy at 7:30PM. The main event will see Mercedes Martinez defending her NCW:FF Championship against Sweet Cherrie. Martinez is the first non-Quebecois Champion in the promotion's history, and Cherrie will be looking to take the hardware back home. Also on the show, Portia Perez will wrestle Pink Flash Kira... or will she? The last two times this match was scheduled, Perez backed out for arrogant reasons. Will she find another way to duck Kira? Cheerleader Melissa will replace Kalamity on this card, as she'll meet up with Courtney Rush in a #1 contenders match, while Kimber Lee will be LuFisto's first opponent since her injury. Also appearing on the show will be Christina von Eerie, Veda Scott, Leah von Dutch, and Sassy Stephie.
There's plenty of action down South too on Saturday. First, we head to Corbin, KY at the Corbin Civic Center for Pro Wrestling Freedom's Lethal Lottery, bell time 8PM. Kyle Matthews defends the PWF Championship against Jordan Kage, but the main draw for this show will be their lethal lottery, which will include several of their biggest stars, including Mickie Knuckles, Nate Cross, and many more.
Down in North Cackalacky, CWF Mid-Atlantic presents Opportunity Knocks tomorrow with the doors opening at 7PM. The main event pits the Tag Champions of Ric Converse and Xsiris against Ben Tyler and Trevor Lee. Also on the show, Andrew Everett Cross takes on Nick Richards in the opening match of the Weaver Cup Tournament, Matty DeNero defends the Television Championship against Mecha Mercenary, and Cedric Alexander makes and appearance.
Down in Rossville, GA, Empire Pro Wrestling presents another $5-to-get-in card at the Empire Arena on Saturday at 8:05PM. The main event has been hyped as the biggest match in promotion history, as Tank will challenge Cyrus the Destroyer for the Empire Championship. Fans of HOSS fights oughtta check this one out. Also on the show will be Chrisjen Hayme.
There'll be some action down South on Sunday too, as Rampage Pro Wrestling emanates from Johnny G's Fun Center in Warner-Robins, GA. Doors open at 2:30PM, and the show will be headlined by Micah Taylor defending the Rampage Championship against Pain. Also on the show, Murder One takes on Bobby Moore, and Kyle Matthews will team with Francisco Ciatso against Mike Cruz and Steve Styles.
Finally, Wrestling Is Awesome makes its long awaited return to action with a doubleshot of shows in New England this weekend. Saturday, doors open at the Fairfield Community Center in Fairfield, ME at 6:30PM. Once you get in, you'll be treated to a solid lineup of eight matches. The highlights include Green Ant taking on Jaka in what should be one of the best technical contests of the weekend. Also on the card, Drew Gulak and Frank O'Rourke will continue their best of infinity series, and Shane Matthews will try to fell Oleg the Usurper.
Sunday, WIA moves west to Rochester, NH at the Rochester American Legion. The doors will open at 2:30PM local, and the big match on this card is the four-team BATTLE PIT. The Devastation Corporation, 3.0, The Baltic Siege, and the Primer Bros. will all compete in this match. Also on the show, Green Ant will battle Jervis Cottonbelly, Jaka will test his mettle against the HOSS-like and entertaining Jivin' Jimmy, Frank O'Rourke will grapple Hallowicked, and Juan Francisco de Coronado takes on Dalton Castle.
Again, pro wrestling only grows if you support it. Even if there isn't a show described here in your area, that doesn't mean a promotion that could be your favorite company isn't holding a show near you. Go see a show this weekend! GO!
