Will they survive the weekend as Champions? Photo Credit: Scott Finkelstein |
Well, well, well. The weekend has dawned upon us once more, and unless you've got a major family event or another set of plans you've had for a good long time, you had best be getting ready to watch some live rasslin'. Shows are happening everywhere. Wanna find out where? Check out Pro Wrestling Events. However, if you're in any of the below areas, you might want to check out some of the shows I've got on the dais for you this weekend.
FRIDAY
Tonight, Ring of Honor is in Philadelphia, and if you want a more in-depth look, check out the preview I wrote.
Up the Jersey Turnpike in Rahway, NJ, Pro Wrestling Syndicate makes their return to the Center Court with a 8 PM bell time. Colt Cabana will wrestle Buff Bagwell in a special attraction match, while Kevin Matthews defends his PWS Championship against Alex Reynolds. Matt Hardy will take on Bonesaw, and Dan Maff battles the Almighty Sheik. Jake "The Snake" Roberts will act as PWS commissioner for one night, and King Kong Bundy, Facade, Starman, and Justin Credible will make appearances
SATURDAY
Ring of Honor will continue their festivities in Philadelphia with a round of television tapings at the National Guard Armory. The show starts at 7 PM local time. The Tag Team Championships will be defended in a three-way match, as former Champions Forever Hooligans (Rocky Romero and Alex Koslov) and current eternal also-rans Caprice Coleman and Cedric Alexander will challenge the Champs, Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish. Davey Richards will welcome the other New Japan guest in singles action against Ricky Marvin. Matt Taven defends the Television Championship against Jay Lethal, while Adrenaline Rush will be split up into singles matches. TaDarius Thomas will put his capoeira against Mark Briscoe's redneck kung-fu, while ACH will go one-on-one with Adam Page. Also scheduled to appear are Mike Bennett, Eddie Kingston, Homicide, RD Evans, Veda Scott, and all four semifinalists from the World Championship tournament. Will there be a World Championship defense? I sure hope so.
Wrestling Is Fun! is Easily Bruised Saturday as they move out of their Lehigh Valley comfort zone into the Varnum Memorial Armory in East Greenwich, RI. Doors will open at 6:30 PM local time, as the Osirian Portal's Ophidian will go up against the bulk of the Devastation Corporation, Max Smashmaster. Also on the show, Jervis Cottonbelly will look to tame the Proletarian Boar of Moldova, and Kobold will look to stomp on Steve "The Turtle" Weiner and kick his shell down the toilet. JT Dunn, who has caught fire in Beyond Wrestling, makes his Wrestling Is... debut against fellow Beyond fraternity member Eric Corvis. Dasher Hatfield will clash with Oleg the Usurper, the Estonian Thunder Frog looks to lick El Hijo del Ice Cream, and the Brown Morning of Belarus does battle with assailANT.
EVOLVE hits up the Guzman Sports Auditorium in Ridgewood, NY with their 23rd show at 8 PM local time. AR Fox will put his EVOLVE Championship on the line against Anthony Nese. Nese has risen up the indie ranks meteorically, and he has Mr. A and Su Yung as seconds. Will he have enough in the tank to take out Fox? In the bonus tag team main event, Johnny Gargano will team up with Trent? to take on the Inner City Machine Guns of Rich Swann and Ricochet. The Young Bucks will host a tag team invitational tournament featuring two matches. Chuck Taylor and Orange Cassidy will take on Los Ben Dejos in the first match, while the Pieces of Hate (Jigsaw and Shard) will take on the Bravado Brothers. Two four-way elimination matches will take place. The first will throw Biff Busick, Green Ant, Josh Alexander, and Maxwell Chicago in the fray, while the second features Lince Dorado, Shane Strickland, Drew Gulak, and Mark Angelosetti. The card is rounded out by Matt Jackson battling Caleb Konley.
CWF Mid-Atlantic presents Fire and Desire at the Mid-Atlantic Sportatorium in Gibsonville, NC, doors opening at 7 PM local time. The show will have booths up for you to donate to the Alamance County Fireman's Association, and the Burlington Fire Department will present colors for the National Anthem. Keeping with the theme, "El Jefe" Manny Garcia will take on Rob "Boogie Woogie Man" McBride in a fireman's match, which is like a lumberjack match, only with real firemen as the lumberjacks. Also on the show, Arik Royal teams with Matty DeNero against Trevor Lee and Chet Sterling.
Branded Outlaw Wrestling at the Woodlawn Gym in San Antonio, TX presents the Showdown in September II, doors opening at 6:30 PM local time. The main event features a defense of the NWA World Championship, as Rob Conway puts his 10 pounds of gold on the line against the Man-Beast, Rhino. Also on the show, Ray Rowe will challenge Charlie Haas for the Branded Outlaw Championship, and the Kingz of the Underground EXPLODE (by executive order because they've been naughty boys), as Ryan Genesis battles his tag team partner Scot Summers.
Platinum Championship Wrestling hits up the Main Event in Porterdale, GA at 6 PM local time. The huge main event pits the tag team of Champion Supernatural and Marko Polo against the Champ's opponent at their big show, Sacred Ground: Chapter 4, Sylar Cross, who is teaming with Chip Day. Also on the show will be the conclusion of their tag league.
Empire Pro Wrestling will present the semifinals of their Chasing the Grail tournament for a shot at the Heavyweight Championship. The final four breaks down with Johnny Viper taking on Chrisjen Hayme and Shaun Tempers battling Logan Alvey. Tommy Penirelli of the tag team Hot Commodity has demanded a shot at the current Champion, Tank. Will he be able to undercut the line?
New Moon Rising Wrestling takes over the Proving Grounds in Deptford, NJ with PG-13 at 7 PM. The show features the titular PG-13 match, which is a baker's dozen wrestlers in a battle royale. Also appearing on the show will be Matt Tremont.
East Coast Wrestling Association will present Luck of the Draw at the Salem County YMCA in Carney's Point, NJ with a door open time of 6 PM. The only match scheduled is a ECWA Championship match between Champion Papadon and challenger Kekoa the Flyin' Hawaiian. Every other match will be decided by luck of the draw, which will feature names such as Mr. Ooh La La, Ahtu, Matt Saigon, and Breaker Morant.
SUNDAY
Rampage Pro Wrestling once again hits up Johnny G's Fun Center in Warner-Robins, GA, with a Sunday Afternoon Spectacular at 3 PM. Francisco Ciatso will defend his newly-won Television Championship against Corey Hollis, while Kory Chavis will do battle with Kyle Matthews. AJ Steele, Drew Adler, and Bobby Moore are also scheduled to appear.
EVOLVE 24 will invade Brooklyn, NY's Lyceum at 7 PM local time Sunday. In the main event, AR Fox and Ricochet will end their feud with EVOLVE rules in place inside the ring and no holds barred outside of it. In another grudge match, Johnny Gargano will battle Rich Swann with a stipulation to be named at EVOLVE 23 the night before. The Young Bucks invitational tournament will continue with Taylor/Cassidy, Pieces of Hate, Los Ben Dejos, and the Bravado Bros. all taking part. The winners of the four-way elimination matches will battle in the Style Battle finals, while the other eliminated competitors will go at it in consolation matches. Tony Nese, Matt Jackson, Caleb Konley, and Trent? are all also scheduled to appear.
Finally, SSW Entertainment Wrestling in Kenosha, WI, will be presenting a New Day at the Brat Stop (Bratwurst, not ill-behaved, spoiled children) at 3 PM local time. Marshe Rockett of Da Soul Touchaz will be there, but really, this show features wrestling at a sausage restaurant. HOW IS THAT NOT THE COOLEST THING EVER (unless you're vegan, which I can totally understand)?
Wrestling is happening everywhere around you. Even if you don't see a show up there described, I can almost guarantee that one is happening within a reasonable drive of you. Go out and partake in the art of wrestling. The only way it grows is if you patronize it. Plus, your favorite wrestling promotion may be out there, and you just don't know it yet.
