Kassius Ohno has been released from his WWE developmental contract. According to reports, Ohno was informed of the release while waiting to begin training at the Performance Center. A reason for termination has not been given at present time. Rumors abounded as to his lack of dedication towards working out and hitting the gym, but no confirmation has been given to that, or any reason, as to his release.
Ohno already has two dates confirmed on his return to the indies as Chris Hero. He will be wrestling Hurricane Helms at Pro Wrestling Syndicate's WrestleBowl next Saturday in Rahway, NJ, and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla announced his return for their December slate of shows, All-Star Weekend 10 via Twitter. I expect these dates are the first of many to be announced, as Ring of Honor, Combat Zone Wrestling, Dragon Gate USA, Pro Wrestling NOAH, and other former stomping grounds would probably want to have him back.
Obviously, I'm a bit miffed at the firing. Hero is an enjoyable wrestler to watch, and for as entertaining as I find him, I wanted to see him on my television every week and getting paid a more-than-livable wage to do it. Regardless of whether he was fired for being a "fatty fat fatkins" according to Vince McMahon's unreasonable vision for body type or some other reason, I don't like the move.
However, the silver lining is that Hero will get to flourish in the indies again, where he will be granted more than a modicum of artistic freedom. Especially since he had gained "don" status even before signing with WWE, he should get a bunch of time and showcase opponents wherever he goes.
Still, I can't help but think this release as a missed opportunity by WWE. Ohno/Hero is the kind of guy who could at the very least fill up the midcard, especially in this iteration of WWE, and chew up time entertainingly. I don't want to jump to conclusions onto why he was released. I'm just disappointed.
