The biggest thing that I kept coming back to as far as watching the show was the Bound For Glory series. We saw qualifying matches and wins for Samoa Joe and Hernandez (I think that’s it), and we were also informed that next week’s show would be a selection show. So I’m not sure exactly why there’s a selection show if we’re also having qualifying matches, but I’m over trying to understand their logic.
But as far as the BFG series goes, I just don’t get it. Apparently, it’s working because this is the third year that we’re seeing this. Personally, I don’t like it. I get that they’re trying to be innovative and do things that WWE doesn’t, but it ties up too much TV for me. The point system is already something that doesn’t work for me because of my history with wrestling and knowing the ins and outs, but the series itself is overkill.
They’re going to start the series next week, which is the second week in June. BFG is in October. That’s four months worth of matches between the same twelve guys. That’s at least a third of the roster tied up in a standings competition with little to no story developing for any of them. And what’s even worse is that it’s usually the top one-third of the roster that’s competing. Luckily, the Aces and Eights saved us last year, but what happens when Anderson and D-Von are inevitably added to the mix?
And to be honest, don’t we all know who’s winning the series anyway? I’m not sure how the AJ Styles storyline will develop in the next four months, but his eligibility to fight for the title at BFG means he’s going to do it then, right? Unless he’s too busy losing his heat to future Hall-of-Famer Kurt Angle, that is…
That’s really my only thoughts on the BFG series, but since I mentioned the Slammiversary results, what about the rest of them? As I said, putting Angle over AJ at this stage of his story makes no sense to me. The same goes to Storm and Gunner winning the tag team titles. Remember two years ago at BFG when James Storm and Bobby Roode finally vaulted into singles stardom and out of the tag team scene? Now they have both held the tag team titles in the last three months with different partners.
And why did we actually have a title change between D-Von and Abyss? I can see giving Abyss some good heat with a win, but why not DQ or countout so Aces and Eights continues to dominate the title scene, ultimately leading to DOC and Knux winning the tag titles? Quite honestly, the only result that made sense was the World Title match. And really, that was another masterful job including Bully Ray. If this was to be Sting’s final shot (but come on, really?), then they put him over like crazy while still telling the end of the story correctly.
TNA definitely still has me scratching my head lately, but I’m tuning into it first as opposed to the other junk we’ve got to choose from.
