A lock to win? He's certainly the most logical choice. Photo Credit: ImpactWrestling.com |
TNA decided who the final four men for the BFG Series were tonight when Styles won a "gauntlet battle royal" among the twelve men in the series. The victory put Styles into the driver's seat with twenty points. Styles was awesome in the match itself, as he revisited his old style and also pulled out possibly the greatest dropkick that I've ever seen. As I've said before, it seems very obvious that Styles is the one pulling out the victory next week at No Surrender. This story has been built to put AJ over like a God. It hasn't been executed to perfection, but I would say it is still on point. While I'd still call Styles my pick to win, it is TNA, so there is always the chance of an unnecessary swerve.
I would say that the next possible victor of the series would be Magnus. Magnus nearly led the series wire-to-wire until Styles' victory tonight, and he's ready for a ginormous push. He's a guy that you could send out there every week as long as you controlled his mic spots, kind of like Sheamus. His in-ring work and his look are not easily rivaled within TNA, and pushing him just makes sense. I don't think it's quite his time though, but it was nice to see him get the a test run throughout the series. I just hope this isn't it for him in the near future. His ties to the Main Event Mafia and the war against the Aces and Eights would seem to be the most likely swerve that TNA could throw our way.
The "darkhorse", if you will, to win this series is Austin Aries. Aries managed to steadily gain points in the tourney in a relatively quiet manner. He seems to have turned face the past couple of weeks? The guy is like a human swerve, a perfect fit for TNA, really. Anyway, I think he's a good guy now, and he seems to be picking some steam back up with the fans given how the fans reacted to him. So, if he's a good guy, him and Bully have a history. I give him an outside chance of winning this thing.
The only guy that I'm not giving a chance to win this shindig is Bobby Roode. While I have loved Roode's re-ascension in TNA through the Extraordinary Gentleman's Organization, him winning here makes absolutely no sense. No one is going to pay to see Bobby Roode versus Bully Ray headline the biggest show of the year, even as awesome as it could possibly be to fans like us. I will say that he'd make a better opponent for either AJ Styles or Austin Aries in the final, so pencil him in as a lock to beat Magnus in the semifinals.
So that's the breakdown of the BFG Series. The column was a little more recap and preview than feedback, but you really don't want to read my feedback tonight. It would be more hate on Chris Sabin, the Main Event Mafia, and Aces and Eights booking. I'm trying to keep it positive tonight, and the final four of the BFG Series are really a big positive in my opinion.
